Thanks to the combined forces of drone technology and Jeff Bezos‘ genius, your books, pencils, condoms and socks will soon be delivered to your doorstep faster than you can say, “I was too lazy to change out of these pajamas anyway.”
The Amazon CEO announced over the weekend that the company is planning to roll out a new service that will revolutionize the way we order things from the comfort of our own home, by delivering goods and services to consumers via unmanned aerial vehicles.
While the idea of a dial-to-door service, as pioneered by drug dealers and co-opted by the food industry and the late, great, unsustainable moped delivery system Kozmo.com, has worked to varying levels of success in the past, Amazon’s drone service isn’t quite ready to hit the market. Among the major concerns about the airborne delivery system is its compliance with FAA regulations, something Bezos’ two-day Amazon Prime service, which operates using more traditional shipping methods, has not had to come up against.
Bezos says that ensuring compliance these regulations will delay the launch of his product, but not indefinitely. He estimates the program will be up and running in four to five years.
“I know this looks like science fiction. It’s not,” Bezos told CBS of his futuristic plan. “It drops the package. You come and get your package and we can do half-hour deliveries.”
Of course, there are limitations. “It won’t work for everything,” he explained. “We’re not going to deliver kayaks, or table saws this way.”
No door-to-door kayaks? Your move, Elon Musk.
