Hollywood’s takeover of the stage continues apace with today’s announcement that, of all things, there’ll be a Back to the Future musical hitting London’s West End in 2015. Yup, that’s the movie with the time-travelling Delorean that has to hit 88mph – good luck pulling that off on a theatre stage.

In the hopes of offering some reassurance that this will be a quality piece of entertainment rather than a shameless cash grab, original screenwriters Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis (who also directed the original cinematic trilogy) will be back to pen this adaptation as we reach the 30th anniversary of the first film. As if that wasn’t enough, they’ve coaxed Alan Silvestri, the film’s composer, back to co-author the music and lyrics for the show. No word yet on whether or not they’ll be dragging Michael J. Fox back into his iconic denim jacket and orange jacket, but the star might somewhat strain credibility as a teenager these days.

Gale has promised that the musical will be “true to the spirit of the film without being a slavish remake,” adding that “We intend to use music from the movie along with brand new songs to make a version of Back to the Future that is fresh, entertaining and takes advantage of all the amazing things that can now be done on stage.”
No one has committed to expanding the show to the States, but if it’s a success expect it to turn up in Broadway before too long.
