Apparently undeterred by Rick Santorum‘s failure to capture the attention of the box office using social conservative values, the anti-gay group Liberty Counsel is releasing its first movie. And it’s recruited Eric Estrada to star in a very Glee-like setup.
As Right Wing Watch first reported, the group put out a trailer for Uncommon a tale of high school students who, faced with cuts to the theater, music, and dance programs, use the Bible as inspiration for their own production.
As the Facebook page for the film describes: “Struggling to find the right script, music & choreography the students get advice from an uncommon source; the Bible! Each student becomes uniquely influenced as they discover that God takes them personally. Equipped with unique talents, they bond together to prepare the perfect production by exploring the diversity of parables taught in the Bible.”
Estrada, best-known for his role on CHiPs, stars as the janitor the students enlist to oversee their efforts. Uncommon also stars “Grammy Award-winning Christian Musician Jason Crabb,” according to a press release, and the founder and Chair of the Liberty Counsel himself, Mat Staver.
“Religious liberty in public school is certainly a fitting topic for our first feature film,” Staver writes in the press release. “Many of the calls Liberty Counsel receives are from parents and students whose speech and religious viewpoints are being censored in the public schools.” “
Here’s the trailer, which, as Towleroad points out, does little to hide the movie’s likely inspirations from the TV show Glee:
The movie will premiere Jan. 18, 2014, according to the press release.
The Liberty Counsel describes itself as “an international nonprofit, litigation, education, and policy organization dedicated to advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and the family since 1989.”
Often this manifests in the group’s campaigns against same-sex marriage and other gay rights legislation, including a lawsuit against New York’s law legalizing gay marriage, and a campaign against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would prevent workplace discrimination against LGBT people. Staver has said that the legislation “will put individuals at risk and ultimately result in significant damage and even death of some individuals.”
