Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Wolf Of Wall Street, which stars Scorsese pet Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, Jon Favreau, Cristin Milioti, Rob “Meathead” Reiner and more, is now being released on Dec. 25. This much anticipated flick was originally supposed to be released in mid-November but was besieged by post-production problems that had showbiz buzzing. Finally the four hour long film was delivered at slightly more doable length: just under three hours.
The movie tells the tale of Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio), a Long Island pennystock broker who served 20 months in prison for defrauding investors in a massive 1990s securities scheme that involved widespread corruption on Wall Street and in the corporate banking world.
We got into a recent early screening with selected press, Agents, Producers and assorted other Hollywood hangers-on. Let us tell you this; it’s not your typical Scorsese film. This one had the VIPS scratching their heads, not quite sure what to make of the director’s latest foray. As one top Agent told me, “Not sure if I love it or am disappointed. I’m kind of confused.” That was the sentiment amongst this VIP crowd that will probably bleed over to the audience.
Diehards still get the grittiness of the Scorsese we love, but now we also get Marty the porno maker. This film is teeming with sex — practically in every other scene. There’s lots of graphic nudity, with many butt shots of Leo (this female reporter has to say he has an adorable backside), and he even gets a red candle inserted in that butt. And there’s a scene of Jonah Hill’s privates that are probably prosthetic, but no one is really saying. Oh, and a multitude of hot naked women prancing about.
What else? Cringe-worthy moments occur constantly, the characters are tough to care about and the narrative tis a bit all over the place and at times hard to follow. And it’s still so completely entertaining, you find yourself believing every unbelievable moment. diCaprio is suave and smarmy, Hill is over the top and quippy in every scene, and McConaughey could find himself a double nominee for his poignant work in this film and his terrific work in Dallas Buyers Club. So all in all, Wolf Of Wall Street is not always easy watching, but rest assured film goers, Wolf is still vintage Scorsese with a little soft porn thrown in.
