Filming for Star Wars: Episode VII is rumored to have begun and it looks like the part of Skywalker’s home planet, Tatooine, will be played by Morocco or Abu Dhabi, not the original site in Tunisia from A New Hope. It’s not because Disney and J.J. Abrams are being corporate dicks like you might think. It’s because the desert is an asshole and is on schedule to swallow Tatooine with sand dunes. But don’t worry, the Tunisian government is on it. The Tunisian tourism ministry has set up a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to preserve the set.
Your weekly allowance from Mom might not go a long way between all the slurpees and Saturday afternoons spent at GameStop, but your dollar could be the dollar that saves Tatooine. Sure, you’re not a hero. But if Star Wars fans don’t ban together and save it, who will? The campaign has already raised $3,600 with 56 days still to go. Twenty-five bucks will earn you good karma, $100 will land you a mention on the campaign’s webpage and Facebook and make you the ultimate chick magnet. If you feel like smashing some piggy banks, $1,000 will get your name engraved on a commemorative panel near the actual set. Not sure what constitute as a “commemorative panel,” but it could be as close as you’ll ever get to vacationing in Tunisia.
