Shane Del Rosario, an Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight, died Monday following a heart attack nearly two weeks ago, on Nov 26.
Del Rosario, 30, fell into a coma after the heart attack, which doctors said was likely the result of a congenital disorder according to his manager, Jason House.
In a statement, the UFC said that it “mourns the tragic loss,” and sent “its deepest condolences to Shane’s family and friends.”
Del Rosario, a professional mixed martial arts fighter since 2006, had worked his way up the pro MMA circuits King of the Cage, Elite XC and M-1 Global, including winning three impressive fights for Strikeforce, all with first-round stoppages. He suffered a serious car accident in April 2011, which led to him missing a scheduled fight, but eventually made a full recovery.
He debuted in UFC in 2012, but suffered defeats from Stipe Miocic and Pat Barry, before being sidelined for much of 2013 thanks to injuries. He ended up 11-2 in MMA, 0-2 in UFC.
