For most, the news of Justin Bieber crooning over a sample from Ice Cube‘s “It Was a Good Day,” on his new single “Bad Day” guaranteed that their day was indeed a bad day. Maybe you cringed so hard your face and jaw are stuck that way, or maybe you did a quick Google search and realized it’s been more than a decade since Cube’s classic track came out. But for a few people, the shock passed quickly, as they knew this was inevitable. Why? Well, it’s because of something Kanye West did back in August of 2011.
As a part of his G.O.O.D. Fridays free download series, which led up to the release of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye caught side-eye from rap nerds around the country with a song that gave The Biebs his seal of approval. Taking original Justin Bieber vocals from the hit song “Runaway Love” and placing them over Wu Tang Clan‘s “Wu Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing Ta F’ Wit,” and then the addition of new verses from Kanye and Raekwon The Chef? That’s the kind of thing that screws up a tween pop star’s ego for life. The way that Miley Cyrus can’t help but be encouraged by working with Kanye West on a remix of “Black Skinheads”.
And yes, I’m sure we can blame Kanye for everything if we look hard enough. But wouldn’t you try and turn these pop kids into a paycheck if you could?
But, to be fair, let’s put ourselves in Justin’s hi-tops, or in Miley’s fishnets. If you faced never-ending snark from the world for the kiddy pop nonsense you rose to fame on, can’t turning 180 degrees be seen as an olive branch? Couldn’t they be trying to make amends for their past transgressions against sound?
